Web Design & Development

With more than twenty years experience in the fast-paced world of web design and development I bring a strong foundation in design principles with practical hands-on experience creating visually appealing, user-friendly, and technically proficient websites. I continue to evolve my understanding of the latest web technologies, responsive design techniques, user experience (UX) principles, and the ability to work with various web development tools.

My goal is to build websites that align with an organization’s brand identity and business objectives. What motivates me is helping clients realize their visions, meet their business needs, and working with people who are passionate about what they do. I collaborate with cross-functional teams, including UX designers, front-end developers, and content creators, to ensure a seamless integration of design elements and functionality. I possess a keen eye for aesthetics, a strong understanding of UX principles, and proficiency in various design tools and web technologies.

I’ve developed enterprise grade web software solutions for Cornell University as application programmer, web designer/developer, web master and as an independent contractor. I’ve developed a college application system for Wells College and I’ve worked with local educational organizations like The Discovery Trail and The History Center in Ithaca, NY to design and develop their web sites and support their educational missions.

Here are some more of the amazing clients I’ve worked with:

Design

My web design skills include:

  • Prototyping
  • Wireframes
  • Responsive design
  • UI/UX
  • Logo design
  • CMS template design
  • Dynamic, interactive user design with HTML, CSS, Javascript
  • Photoshop, Boxy SVG, OmniGraffle

The image at the top of this article is an example of an intermediate wireframe and the resulting final design. My design skills also include developing a site’s color palette, prioritizing content and designing for mobile and full-size screens.

I am passionate about the quality of the work I put out in the world. I am a digital designer, an illustrator, a graphic designer, a game designer. I design business logos for clients. I’m a web site and app designer with the technical skills to turn designs, concepts, and prototypes into working products.

One of the first principles of web design is that users don’t read. They skim, scan and focus on areas of high contrast and bold text or images. So, how do I effectively communicate my design skills? Let me present the following images of some of my site designs:

Logo designs

Web design covers a lot of areas – responsive design, accessibility, layout, CSS. It also involves aesthetics and to get a better idea of my art and design skills see: https://keithkunst.com/

Development

My web development skills include:

Front-end and back-end technologies:

  • RESTful, AJAX
  • OAuth2
  • Web Applications
  • Coldfusion, PHP, SQL, HTML5, Javascript
  • Database development

Integrations:

  • Integrating Facebook, event calendars, Google Maps
  • APIs (Withings)
  • eCommerce
  • Audio, Video

I am a full-stack developer. I work with a variety of technologies, programming languages, and frameworks to build functional, interactive, and user-friendly web sites.

My front-end user interface (UI) / user experience (UX) development skills include HTML, HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. I create mobile-first, responsive sites that work across different devices and screen sizes.

I have built numerous sites in a variety of content management systems  including Commonspot, Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress.

My back-end development includes Coldfusion, PHP, SQL, AJAX, MySQL, SQLite, XML, JSON, ASP, MS Access, OAuth2 and RESTful programming languages and techniques to process data, manage databases, handle user requests and develop interactive web applications. I am an expert database developer proficient in creating normalized relational databases.

My integration skills include working with various third-party APIs including Withings, Facebook, event calendars and Google maps. I’ve developed eCommerce sites and can edit and integrate audio and video for your site.

Example Project

I developed a research study system for Cornell University that has since been used by the University of Alabama Birmingham, the University of Delaware and others to study the effects of monitoring one’s weight in weight gain prevention and weight maintenance.

The study uses Withings’ weight scales. The database I developed is hosted in MySQL, security is via OAuth2, Withings’ APIs allow for user account authentication and notification subscriptions. The study and the administration system is built in PHP and SQL. Weight data is returned from Withings in JSON format and I developed the administration system using AJAX methods to create a dynamic UI where data is accessed and maintained on a single “page.”

I set a CRON process on the server to automatically generate emails to the study monitors and subjects as needed. The subject emails include a system generated weight graph for the individual subject. The graphs are created and configured using the pChart23 library.
